Access Control for High Security Doors
Access control systems—card readers, biometrics, keypads, or central management—require compatible locks. Electromechanical and motorized locks (EN 14846) integrate with these systems while maintaining RC ratings and evacuation compliance. This section covers the key concepts for specifying access control on high-security doors.

Our doors can be configured with electromechanical locks for access control integration.
Split Spindle vs Straight Spindle
Split Spindle (e.g. ABLOY EL566/EL568)
The outside and inside handles are mechanically independent. The outside handle is electrically controlled—it only operates when the access control system grants access. The inside handle (or panic bar) is always free: one action releases the lock for evacuation without power. This configuration is typical for doors where controlled entry is required from outside, but free exit is required from inside.
Straight Spindle (e.g. ABLOY EL567/EL569)
Both handles are connected and electrically controlled. Access can be restricted on both sides. Evacuation behavior depends on the lock configuration and whether mechanical override is provided. Used where controlled access is needed on both sides, e.g. certain data centers or secure areas.
Fail-Locked vs Fail-Unlocked
Fail-locked (fail-secure): On power failure, the lock remains locked. Suitable for security-critical applications. Fail-unlocked (fail-safe): On power failure, the lock releases. Often required for fire escape doors to ensure evacuation. The choice depends on your security and fire safety assessment.
Door and Lock Monitoring
Electromechanical locks can provide monitoring outputs for: door position (open/closed), bolt position (locked/unlocked), handle use, and sabotage (tampering). These signals integrate with building management and security systems for real-time status and alarms.
Compatible Locks
Our access control compatible locks include ABLOY MP520/MP522 (motorized), ABLOY EL566/EL568 (split spindle), ABLOY EL567/EL569 (straight spindle), and ISEO MULTIBLINDO. For details, see Locks Compatible with TDS Security Doors and EN 14846.
Alarm Receiving Centers (EN 50518)
For alarm receiving centers and similar critical infrastructure, EN 50518 specifies additional requirements for doors and locks. ISEO MULTIBLINDO is suitable for these applications.
