EN 14846 – Electromechanically Operated Locks
Standard: EN 14846:2008
EN 14846 specifies requirements for electromechanically operated locks and latches. These locks are controlled by an electrical signal and are used in access control systems. The standard covers safety, durability, and compatibility with building automation and security systems.

Standard Information
- Standard: EN 14846:2008
- Title: Building hardware – Electromechanically operated locks and striking plates – Requirements and test methods
- Scope: Electrically operated locks and latches for use in doors
Key Requirements
- Electrical operation and compatibility with access control systems
- Durability (operating cycles)
- Mechanical strength and resistance to forced entry
- Fail-safe and fail-secure behavior (fail-unlocked vs fail-locked)
- Monitoring outputs (door position, bolt status, sabotage)
Fail-Locked vs Fail-Unlocked
Electromechanical locks can be configured to behave differently when power is lost. Fail-locked (fail-secure) means the lock remains locked—suitable for security-critical applications. Fail-unlocked (fail-safe) means the lock releases—often required for evacuation routes. The choice depends on your fire safety and security requirements.
Evacuation and Panic Hardware
Many electromechanical locks used in doorsets support evacuation via EN 179 or EN 1125 compliant hardware. Split spindle variants allow electric control on the outside while the inside handle or panic bar provides mechanical release without power.
Electromechanical Locks Used in TDS Doors
- ABLOY MP520 / MP522 – Motorized multi-point lock with electric bolt and hook retraction
- ABLOY EL566 / EL568 – Split spindle; electric control outside, mechanical exit inside
- ABLOY EL567 / EL569 – Straight spindle; both sides electrically controlled
- ISEO MULTIBLINDO / FIAM – Multi-point with access control, EN 50518 compatible
