Glass in Bullet-Proof Doors (EN 1063)
EN 1063 specifies requirements for bullet-resistant glass. It classifies glazing in threat levels BR1–BR7 (plus SG1–SG2 for shotgun munitions), each corresponding to different small arms fire. The glass must stop the specified number of strikes and produce no spalling. See Spalling for the safety requirement.
Test Requirements
To achieve a given rating, the glazing must stop the bullet for the specified number of strikes, with multiple strikes placed within 120 mm of each other on a 500 mm × 500 mm test sample. The glazing must be shatterproof and produce no spalls after each strike.
BR Classification
| Class | Weapon | Calibre | Shots |
|---|---|---|---|
| BR1 | Handgun | .22 LR | 3 |
| BR2 | Handgun | 9×19 mm | 3 |
| BR3 | Handgun | .357 Magnum | 3 |
| BR4 | Handgun | .44 Magnum | 3 |
| BR5 | Rifle | 5.56×45 mm NATO | 3 |
| BR6 | Rifle | 7.62×51 mm NATO | 3 |
| BR7 | Rifle | 7.62×51 mm (armour-piercing) | 3 |
SG1 and SG2 classes apply to shotgun munitions. Any sample complying with a higher BR class also complies with lower classes. BR classes are used in conjunction with EN 1522 for the complete door assembly.
Our bullet-proof doors are available with BR5–BR7 glass in various shapes and distributions. See EN 1522 for the door assembly classification.
