Lock Types: Mechanical, Electromechanical and Motorized
Security doors can be fitted with three main lock types: mechanical, electromechanical, and motorized. Each type has distinct characteristics, applicable standards, and typical applications. Choosing the right type depends on your RC rating requirements, fire safety needs, evacuation routes, and whether you need access control integration.

Our doors are available with mechanical, electromechanical, or motorized locks depending on your requirements.
Mechanical Locks
Mechanical locks operate purely through mechanical action—key, handle, or thumb turn. No electrical power is required. They are governed by EN 12209, which defines security classes (up to class 7 for the highest mechanical security), durability, and resistance to forced entry.
Typical applications: RC2 and RC3 doors where access control is not required, or as a backup when power fails. Examples include ROM 2, KALE 352 R, and MOTTURA Multi Point. Some mechanical locks can be used in fire-rated door assemblies when tested as part of the complete door set.
Electromechanical Locks
Electromechanical locks combine mechanical operation with electrical control. The bolt or latch is retracted by an electric signal (solenoid or motor), while mechanical override (e.g. key or panic bar) is available for evacuation. They are covered by EN 14846.
Key features: fail-locked or fail-unlocked configuration, integration with access control, monitoring outputs (door position, bolt status, sabotage). Split spindle versions allow electric control on the outside and free mechanical exit on the inside (EN 179/EN 1125). Examples: ABLOY EL566/EL568, ABLOY EL567/EL569, ISEO MULTIBLINDO.
Motorized Locks
Motorized locks use an electric motor to retract the bolt and additional locking points (e.g. hooks). They provide multi-point locking with automatic engagement when the door closes. Like electromechanical locks, they fall under EN 14846 and support access control and monitoring.
Typical applications: RC3–RC5 doors with access control, day/night mode, and evacuation via handle or panic bar. Examples: ABLOY MP520/MP522. They can be configured fail-locked or fail-unlocked depending on fire and security requirements.
Comparison by Application
| Lock Type | Standard | Typical RC | Access Control | Evacuation |

| Mechanical | EN 12209 | RC2–RC5 | No | Key or handle |
| Electromechanical | EN 14846 | RC3–RC5 | Yes | EN 179/1125 |
| Motorized | EN 14846 | RC3–RC5 | Yes | EN 179/1125 |
