EN 1154 – Door Closers Standard

Standard: EN 1154

EN 1154 specifies requirements for door closers for use on doors. It covers closing force, durability, safety, and resistance to environmental conditions. Door closers used on fire-rated doors must be certified for that application.

Our fire-rated doors use EN 1154 certified door closers.

Standard Information

  • Standard: EN 1154
  • Title: Building hardware – Controlled door closing devices – Requirements and test methods
  • Scope: Door closers for pedestrian doors

Closing Force Classes (EN 1–6)

EN 1154 defines closing force classes from EN 1 (lightest) to EN 6 (heaviest). The class determines the maximum door width and weight the closer can handle. Heavier or wider doors require higher classes. Our ABLOY DC300 can be adjusted to EN 3–6; DC500 to EN 1–4; DC700 to EN 3–6.

Fire Door Certification

Door closers used on fire-rated doors must be certified for use in fire-resistant door assemblies. ABLOY DC300 (standard and sliding arm) and DC700 are certified for fire doors. DC500 can be used in fire doors depending on the tested door set.

Durability and Corrosion

The standard specifies minimum durability (e.g. 500,000 cycles for our ABLOY closers) and corrosion resistance. EN 1670 class 3 corrosion resistance is typical for interior and moderate exterior use.

Adjustments

  • Closing speed
  • Latching speed (final closing)
  • Backcheck (slowing in the opening range)
