Glass in Fire-Rated Doors
Fire-rated doors must use glazing that maintains the door's fire resistance. The glass is tested as part of the door assembly under EN 1634-1 and classified according to EN 16034. Fire doorsets are certified under EN 16034.

Fire Resistance Classification
Fire-rated glass is classified by the level of protection it provides:
- E (Integrity): Blocks smoke and flames; does not prevent heat transmission. Minimum for many applications. The glass surface can still burn if touched.
- EW (Integrity + Radiation): Maintains structural strength and reduces heat radiation into the unexposed compartment, preventing combustion of materials on the safe side. The surface can still burn if touched.
- EI (Integrity + Insulation): Highest protection. Barrier against smoke and flame with significant heat reduction; allows safe escape even during intense fire on the other side.
Time Ratings
Fire resistance is expressed in minutes. Common durations include EI30, EI45, EI60, EI90, EI120, EI180, EI240. The number indicates how long the glass maintains its protective properties.
Approved Glass Types
- Ceramic glass: Transparent, maintains integrity at high temperatures
- Intumescent laminated glass: Interlayer expands when heated, providing insulation
- Gel-filled glass units: Gel layer provides fire resistance
- Wired glass: Where permitted by regulations
For fire door glass replacement, see Replacing Fire Door Glass. Only certified professionals should replace fire door glass—the replacement must match the original specification to maintain the door's fire rating.
