Door Closers for Security and Fire Doors

Door closers ensure that fire-rated and security doors close reliably after use. They maintain compartmentation and security. For fire doors, automatic closing is essential for fire safety. The European standard EN 1154 defines the requirements for door closers. It covers closing force, durability, and fire resistance. All TDS fire and security doors are supplied with certified closers.

Our fire-rated doors are equipped with EN 1154 certified door closers.

Why Door Closers Matter

Fire-rated doors must close automatically to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. A door left open defeats the purpose of the fire barrier. Door closers also support security by ensuring doors are not left ajar. They are required on corridors, escape routes, and compartment walls. For both applications, the closer must be certified to EN 1154. For fire doors, it must also be suitable for use in fire-resistant door assemblies.

Mechanism Types

Rack and Pinion

A gear mechanism converts linear motion to rotational motion. This design is common in hydraulic closers such as the ABLOY DC300. It is available in both standard arm and sliding arm versions. The mechanism provides smooth, adjustable closing. A backcheck feature slows the door in the final opening range.

Cam Action

A cam mechanism can reduce opening force while maintaining closing power. This design is used in the ABLOY DC500 and DC700. It is often preferred for heavy doors. It is also useful where lighter opening force is needed for accessibility.

Closing Force Classes

EN 1154 defines closing force classes from EN 1 to EN 6. Higher numbers mean stronger closing force. The class must match the door weight and width. Light doors may need EN 1 or EN 2. Heavy fire doors often need EN 4 to EN 6. Our ABLOY closers are adjustable within their rated range. Correct sizing ensures the door closes fully and latches.

Standard Arm vs Sliding Arm

Standard arm closers mount with a visible arm between the door and frame. They typically support wider doors. For example, the DC300 standard arm supports doors up to 1400 mm wide. Sliding arm closers use a guide rail and track. They are more compact. They are often used with door coordinators in double-leaf fire doors. See the ABLOY G461 for details.

Choosing the Right Closer

The right door closer depends on door weight, width, and use. Fire doors need EN 1154 certification. Security doors benefit from reliable closing. Double-leaf doors often need a coordinator. Single-leaf doors can use standard or sliding arm. Door width limits vary by model: DC300 standard arm up to 1400 mm, DC500 sliding arm up to 1100 mm. Our team can help you select the right model for your project.

ABLOY Door Closers Used in TDS Doors

We use ABLOY DC300, DC500, and DC700 door closers in our security and fire-rated doors. All models are certified to EN 1154. Each suits different door weights and widths. They are tested for 500,000 cycles. For full details and specifications, see our ABLOY DC300, DC500, DC700 page.
